Benefits of domestic sprinkler systems

Statistics reveal there has never been any multiple loss of life in a building that has an effective sprinkler system.

There has been a lot written about the installation of sprinkler systems in domestic homes and a lot of myths that have surfaced as a result.

But as the simple statement above suggests, the reality is they offer us valuable protection against the devastating effects of a fire in the home.

Whilst smoke alarms can give valuable early warning to smoke or a growing incident, they have no ability to extinguish a growing fire or protect those physically unable – like a small child, the elderly or a disabled person – to escape on their own.

This is where a well maintained and installed domestic sprinkler system comes into its own.

How does it work?

Like any domestic plumbing system, fire sprinklers in the home are installed within ceiling or flood voids and, thanks to major improvements in ‘aesthetic’ design, the sprinkler heads are often concealed from view and difficult for the naked eye to see.

Each one is fitted with a thermal element that is activated by heat from a fire, sending water from the mains supply spraying over a pre-determined area.

The fixed temperature is approximately 68°C/155 F (or 30°C above ambient room temp), so it is very rare for them go off outside of a real fire.

It is important to note that in most instances, one sprinkler head at the source of the fire will be enough to contain the spread of the fire.
